Nobody replaces a heating system for fun. It's usually one of a handful of things that tips the balance — here's how to think it through properly.
Heating systems don't announce their retirement. They just get slowly more expensive, less reliable, or less comfortable to live with — until one day you realise you've been putting up with something that's no longer worth putting up with. Here are the signs worth paying attention to, and how to weigh up what to do about them.
Signs worth paying attention to
- Oil or gas bills that keep climbing, even though your household's usage hasn't really changed
- A boiler needing more call-outs than it used to, or old enough that parts are getting harder to source
- Cold spots or rooms that never quite reach a comfortable temperature, no matter how long the heating's on
- No zone control — the whole house heats up just to warm the one room you're actually using
- You're renovating anyway — an extension, new flooring or a re-plaster is the cheapest point to change how a house is heated, because the pipework is exposed either way
Weighing up the decision
It's worth being honest here: switching heating systems is a genuine upfront cost, and it isn't automatically the right call for every property or every timeline. What's worth putting on the scales is the upfront cost of installation against the running-cost savings you can reasonably expect over the years that follow (see our guide to heat pump running costs), and against current SEAI grant support, which can take a substantial amount off that upfront figure.
Questions worth asking before you decide
- What is my current system actually costing me? Pull your last 12 months of bills rather than guessing from memory.
- What would a new system realistically save me? Ask for a specific, written estimate — not a general promise that you'll "save a fortune." Our guide to choosing an installer covers this in more detail.
- Does my existing setup suit the system I'm considering? Radiators, insulation standard and hot press space can all affect what's the right fit, or what needs to change first.
- Am I already disturbing floors, walls or the boiler house for another reason? If so, this might be the cheapest point you'll ever get to switch.
