What is a centralised vacuum system?
A centralised — or "central" — vacuum system moves the vacuum motor and dirt collection out of the room entirely. Instead of pushing a heavy unit from room to room, you plug a lightweight hose into a wall inlet, and suction carries dust and debris through tubing hidden inside the walls to a single collection canister, usually sited in a garage, utility room or attic.

How the system works
- Wall inlets are fitted at convenient points around the house, usually one per floor or per few rooms, connected into a network of tubing concealed inside the walls.
- You plug a lightweight hose into the nearest inlet and vacuum as normal — there's no unit to pull along behind you.
- Suction from the central power unit draws the dirt through the tubing to a collection canister, out of sight and out of the living space.
- You empty the canister periodically, rather than after every single use.

Tubing is easiest to route while walls are open, so a central vacuum system is a natural addition during a new build or a renovation — but it can also be planned around an existing layout where access allows.
