Heating Controls Explained
A heating control system is the difference between heating your whole house because one room feels cold, and heating exactly the rooms that need it.
Heating controls let you manage every zone of your home's heating and cooling from one simple, central device. Done properly, that means lower bills and a more comfortable home — because you're only ever heating the rooms that actually need it, rather than the whole house at once.
What heating controls actually let you do
- Zone labelling — name and control each zone or room independently, rather than treating the house as one block.
- Stop facility — switch heating off completely in rooms you're not using, like a guest bedroom, without affecting the rest of the house.
- Independent zone temperatures — for example, bedrooms held at 20°C and a baby's room at 24°C, at the same time.
- Programmable timer — set your own schedule per zone, rather than one timer setting for the entire home.
- Frost protection — even a zone that's switched off stays protected against freezing.
Simple to operate, however it's installed
We supply sensor and touch-screen interface wireless heating controls, and the interface is designed to be simple enough to pick up in a few minutes rather than needing a manual. Where a system has a touch-screen control pad, many models use an identical interface to the individual room devices, so you're only ever learning one screen. The control system itself is also configurable, meaning it can be adapted to fit site-specific requirements — useful if you add a room, change how a space is used, or want to bring an extension onto the same system later.
Why the wiring matters
The in-room devices run on safe, low-voltage (12V) cabling. That matters for two reasons: it's inherently safer than mains wiring run to every room, and it means no batteries — no replacing them, no recurring cost, and no risk of a dead battery leaking inside a wall-mounted unit or causing RF interference. Every device is individually tested before it leaves the factory, which keeps on-site reliability high.
Do you need heating controls if you already have a heat pump?
Yes — good controls complement any heat source, whether that's an Orca heat pump, oil, gas or solid fuel. They come into their own alongside a zoned system like underfloor heating, where being able to run different rooms at different temperatures, on different schedules, is exactly what stops you paying to heat space nobody's using.
