The Benefits of Underfloor Heating

Radiators heat the air in a room. Underfloor heating heats the room itself — and the difference shows up in comfort as much as on the bill.

Most heating systems in Irish homes work by convection — they heat the air, and rely on that air moving around the room to spread the warmth. Underfloor heating works on a different principle entirely, and once you understand the difference, it's easy to see why it's become such a popular choice for new builds and renovations alike.

Radiant heat vs convection heat

Radiators are a convection system: they heat the air immediately around them, and because hot air rises, it collects near the ceiling while the floor — where you actually are — stays the coolest part of the room. That's what creates draughts and the "hot near the radiator, cold everywhere else" feeling as warm air circulates and mixes with cold air. Underfloor heating works differently: it radiates heat upward from the entire floor area, warming the room evenly from the ground up rather than pooling heat at ceiling height.

What that means in practice

  • Even temperature throughout the room, not just near the heat source
  • Cost-effective, with lower energy consumption than heating the same space through radiators
  • Virtually maintenance-free once installed, and completely unobtrusive — no radiators to work around, paint behind or bump into
  • Can be controlled by a thermostat or a full heating controls system for zone-by-zone comfort
  • Suits both new-build projects and retrofits into existing homes

A natural match for a heat pump

You can save further on your heating bills by connecting an air-to-water heat pump to an underfloor system. Heat pumps generally run at their most efficient producing gentler, lower-temperature heat over longer periods — which is exactly the kind of heat underfloor systems are designed around, unlike radiators, which are typically sized for shorter bursts of higher-temperature water. Paired together, you get a constant, low-cost supply of hot water circulating through the floor, providing even heat all year round.

New build or retrofit?

In a new build, the pipe network is laid out on top of insulation before the floor screed is poured, so once the floor is finished, the whole system disappears from view — genuinely unobtrusive, and virtually maintenance-free from that point on. Retrofitting into an existing home is also possible, though the right approach depends on your current floor build-up, so it's worth talking through your specific property before deciding.

Keeping it running well

Because the pipework is buried under the floor, underfloor heating is designed to be left alone — there's no radiator to bleed or repaint, and no valve sticking after a summer of disuse. If output ever does start to drop off, the usual cause is the same as with radiators: sludge and scale building up in the system over time. A system flush clears that out and restores the system to full efficiency, without having to lift any pipework.
